David van Belle
The Program

David van Belle is a Calgary-based writer, director and actor.  He came to Calgary to do his MFA in Directing at the University of Calgary, and spent seven years as part of the creative ensemble of One Yellow Rabbit before leaving to go freelance.  Currently he is co-Artistic Director of Ghost River Theatre.  Writing credits include Friction (with Blake Brooker, One Yellow Rabbit), Picnic and X-Ray (with David Rhymer, Ghost River Theatre), Dragonfly Episode IV:  Identity (with Anita Miotti and Ken Cameron, Theatre of the Living Statue), BUZZ JOB! The True Story of Cal Cavendish (with Kris Demeanor), The Highest Step in the World (with Eric Rose, Ghost River Theatre/ATP) and Reverie and Everything Is Terribly Nice Here. (Ghost River Theatre). Currently in progress: Liberation Days and The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst.  He’ll be teaching Devised Theatre at the University of Alberta later this semester.

David just finished co-creating Of Fighting Age with Col Cseke and Christopher Duthie for Verb Theatre at the High Performance Rodeo.  His greatest creation over the past year has been his daughter, Wren (in collaboration with Vanessa Sabourin).  David is fascinated by people’s lives and the ways in which they live them.
